While coronavirus has killed and infected far fewer people than influenza, it has most of the world in a panic. People are falling for misinformation and targeting anyone who looks Asian and Italian as having the disease. It’s leading to frightening and sad situations in many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports of xenophobia are growing and posing\nconcerning as the abusive acts are targeting all ages. In London, a student\nfrom Singapore was badly beaten by four other men who made comments about \u201cnot\nwanting coronavirus\u201d in their country. Two teenagers were arrested for\nracially-motivated aggravated assault. The victim was left with significant\nfacial injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not the first time situations like this\nhave happened. In the Netherlands, a Korean woman was the victim of an attempted\nassault while riding her bike home. The men who attacked her yelled \u201cChinese\u201d\nwhile trying to hit her. She was able to stay on her bicycle, but it made her\nfearful of being alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are reports of attackers yelling \u201call\nChinese people have coronavirus.\u201d An Italian restaurant posted a sign telling\npeople from China to say out. Shoppers are avoiding Asians in stores, and some\nAsians are being asked to leave public transportation modes, restaurants,\nshops, and classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents of school-aged children are keeping\nchildren home if the children have Asian classmates. A group of boys in Canada\ndemanded a pair of Chinese boys play a game called \u201ctest for coronavirus.\u201d Even\nin the U.S, there’s discrimination. A Washington University student heard other\nstudents talking about their fears of coronavirus and how that university has\nan abundance of Chinese students. Some Asian students report that if they sit\ndown to eat, others in the area will get up and move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These racist comments and attacks have led to\nthe hashtag #JeSuisPasUnVirus in France. It’s led to people of Asian descent\nfeeling that they have to explain that while they have Asian heritage, they are\nnot necessarily Chinese or have ever visited China. As this xenophobic behavior\nis happening everywhere, some cities are condemning the acts. The mayor of\nCanada is one of them. The hope is that sense will prevail, but it’s\ncomplicated by people spreading misinformation about the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Know the Facts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Know the facts about coronavirus and share\nthem with others. As misinformation spreads, the best preventative measure\npeople can take is to be educated and correct others who try to spread false\ninformation. You can’t stop everyone from misunderstanding this virus, but\nevery little bit helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coronavirus is spread from one person to\nanother through respiration and saliva. If you’re within around six feet of an\ninfectious person who coughs, there is the chance that you’ll breathe in some\nof those droplets or touch something the droplets landed on. As a result, your\nbest chance at avoiding the virus is to keep your distance from people who are\nactively coughing and sneezing. Wash hands after touching things in public\nareas, such as door handles, keypads, cart handles, or items on shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re sick or know anyone who is, say\nhome. Don’t go to work or school. Stay at home for two weeks or longer. Ask\nyour doctor if you’re not sure how long you should self-quarantine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognize the symptoms. Within as little as\ntwo days and up to two weeks, people with coronavirus have a cough, fever, and\ndifficulty breathing. It’s going to be pretty similar to the flu. If someone\nlooks like they have the flu, keep your distance. If you have these symptoms,\ncall your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
